moasjamI am a new student with the Georgetown Center for Latin American Studies working on a Master’s degree in the  five year cooperative program. I recently graduated from Tulane University in Latin American Studies and International Development with a Minor in Brazilian Studies.  I have focused my undergraduate studies on Brazil (receiving the honor by Tulane’s of The Almir Brunetti Award for Excellence in Brazilian Studies) and am fluent in Portuguese having lived in Rio de Janeiro for a year and a half  in the last three years including studying at PUC-Rio.

I have focused my studies on a wide variety of aspects of Brazil, everything from Machado de Assis, to the Gangs and social networks, to the counterculture under the dictatorship and artists like Helio Oititica and Lygia Clark. My decision to go to Georgetown, however, came out after I took part in the Model Organization of American States held in Washington DC this Spring. I was fascinated to meet and speak with people at organizations such as OAS and  IDB who are making social and political policies in the world. My week at the  OAS compelled me to apply to the program at Georgetown so that I can gain more experience in that arena.
