Ten “Must-Knows” For Life as a Graduate Student

bizarro-return-to-ozSo, because my life as a graduate student has taken up so much of my time, I have been very neglectful to my blog. However, over the past month, I have been learning tons of new information. I have learned a lot about Latin America and have been entering into the world of Latin Americanists in Washington, DC. For this information, check out my Twitter, which I have been much more dedicated to in the last month. I have also learned a lot about what it takes to be a graduate student. I thought I would share with you all ten lessons that I have learned over the past few months.

Ten Lessons of Surviving Graduate School:

  1. There is a lot of reading. Like Nike says, “Just do it.”
  2. There is a lot of reading. If you can’t do it, or waited until the last minute, read the introduction and conclusion and pick out the argument. That is all the teacher will want in the long run anyway and probably the only thing you will remember about the book.
  3. Remember when you were a mere little undergraduate, and you felt really smart a lot of the time? Well, in Graduate School everybody is intimidatingly smart. Suck it up. You can’t be the best at everything. Instead use this wealth of knowledge to your benefit and for inspiration!
  4. On a good note, you will learn about lots of things that really interest you. Take advantage of this…
  5. Especially take advantage of #4 because learning about things that really interest you will pretty much be the only thing that you will be doing over the next year or two.
  6. With all this stress, exercise is a must. Get that stress out! Personally, I started Bikrim Yoga, which is a great stress killer.
  7. Get a group together within your program to study/share the misery of being so busy. It will help you stay motivated and study, and it will also help when all you need is a few minutes of ranting about school!
  8. Network. Network. Network! NETWORK! After all, you do want a job after these years of stress! (Plus, networking could be a good excuse to go to a happy hour or two if you need!)
  9. A professor said to us at the beginning of the semester, “Don’t make your professor feel like you know more than they do on the subject that they are teaching. That is just a bad idea.” You would think that this is obvious, but in my experience, it is not.
  10. Take advantage of every minute. When Graduate School is over, and you’re in the real world, you probably will be looking back on it thinking, “Ahh, those were the days…”

Well, I hope this helps people who are in grad school/thinking about going into grad school! Enjoy!

The Life of a Grad Student / Intern

I know! I’ve been neglecting my beloved blog. It has been crazy ever since I started graduate school at Georgetown’s Center for Latin American Studies. I am working on tons of interesting stuff, and trying to convince/ (coerce slightly ;) ) people to guest blog for me so we can continue to share to intellectual wealth. If you are interesting in writing a guest blog about ways we can make the world a better place by being “Global Citizens,” or just about what’s going on around the world, please let me know! I would be so grateful!!

Wednesday Pick-Me-Up, (one day late…)

Wednesdays can be the hardest day of the week, right smack in the middle. You have already worked two days but still have two days left. Last week I started a Wednesday pick-me-up, because sometimes all it takes is talking about the good things of the week to make your week that much better.

So one week into my so called habitual Wednesday post, and I’m already late. However, I do have an excellent excuse: I was in the plane flying back to the United States yesterday. Arriving in the States is great because I get to see my family and friends here, but there is always a little strain in my heart when I get off the plane hear all that English and realize my time in Brazil is over (for now…). This calls for a really BIG “pick-me-up.” So despite the fact that it is Thursday, I’m going to continue with my new tradition.

Here are the five things that brightened up my last week:

Wednesday Pick-Me-Up: Five Things That Made My Week a Little Brighter

This is a new series that I am going to start: Every Wednesday, that day when we all are still trudging through the week waiting for Friday to arrive, I will post five things that made my week a little more special. I encourage my readers to also think about five great things that happened in their weeks too. Feel free to comment and share them on this post. We can learn from each other and pass on the good spirits, and that way all of our Wednesdays can be a little bit brighter!

Enjoy!

  1. TweetDeck: I discovered this wonderful program yesterday, and since then Twitter has never been the same. If you manage more than one profile, it is a must.
  2. I finally spent time updating both my LinkedIn and Brazen Careerist profiles. Friend me!
  3. I met an incredibly interesting and inspiring woman last week, Theresa Williamson. She is the director of a great NGO, Catalytic Communities. Although the main office is located in Rio de Janeiro, Catalytic Communities works to empower a global network of communities generating and sharing solutions.
  4. I got an interview tomorrow for the perfect internship for when I get to Washington, DC. This makes my week a little brighter, but also I’m a little anxious!
  5. cabofrioThis weekend I will go to Cabo Frio and spend some time relaxing in my favorite city in Rio de Janeiro state. Hopefully it will be sunny!

That wraps it up! Happy Wednesday!
