It is always strange to hear about a big news story from the United States while I am abroad. Generally it is a kind of homesickness itch that makes one want to be at home with the people who are sharing the same emotions and experiences surrounding the news.

With Michael Jackson, however, even if he died in the US and was a US citizen, the whole world has been commemorating his life all night yesterday and all day today. Michael Jackson in the news over the last ten years has been reduced to appearances about his pedophilia problems and his strange behaviors. After his death, however, people have once again rejoiced in the success of his musical career. Even in the news in Brazil, all they have talked about is the musician’s life, his appearances and experiences in Brazil, and Brazilians who have been moved and motivated by his music. The Situation:

Since I will be moving to Washington, DC in August, I decided to start looking for an apartment and get that aspect taken care of while I’m still in the same continent. The Georgetown five-year cooperative program in the Center for Latin American Studies sends their students abroad for one summer–both to get the abroad experience if one hasn’t already and to get some credits under the belt before diving into things in Washington, DC in August.

The minute that I moved back to my parents house from New Orleans for the two-week “in-between” time before heading to Rio de Janeiro, I started insistently looking at Craigslist. (You never know when the house of your dreams will get posted!). My two potential roommates are friends from Tulane who are also attending the same program with me at Geogetown next fall, not to mention that both of these girls were crucial parts of the delegation of Jamaica during the Washington Model Organziation of American States. Unfortunately they are already in South America attending a program in Chile.

So the three of us, me in Atlanta and the girls in Chile, are trying to find an apartment in Washington, DC, thank god for Google Map’s “Street View.” I wasn’t discouraged. I was going to find an apartment before I left for Brazil. Keep reading to find out if I did…
